Trying Something Different

Sometimes I don’t want to try an activity because it isn’t ‘my thing’. On some occasions I have avoided that activity by saying ‘No thanks’. However, there have been times when I have decided to give it a go, perhaps reluctantly, and ended up enjoying myself or benefitting in some way. Sometimes it is good to try something one normally wouldn’t.

One day I was out with a couple of friends and they suggested mini golf. With my lack of coordination and disinterest in that type of activity I didn’t want to participate. I guess I could have refused but felt sort of obliged to join in. The other two had played mini golf before and I expected to be hopeless at it. I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the game and was better at it than I thought I would be.

There are other times when I have gone on an outing or visited a place I didn’t think would interest me only to find I got something positive from the experience. It has provided a boost to my confidence and has also stopped me from getting stuck in a rut doing the same things all the time.

Then, there have been times when I haven’t enjoyed myself and have just been so glad to get home. The next time I have been pottering about having a quiet time at home I have appreciated being in my own environment, doing ‘my own thing’ even more than I usually do.

Sometimes the best thing is to turn down invitations to participate in things that aren’t your style. At other times there is something to be gained from stepping outside your comfort zone and giving a different activity a go. Even if you don’t enjoy the new experience at least you will know for sure it isn’t your thing.
