Too Clever

Are you the sort of person who begins a project only to be distracted by another, and then another, perhaps without finishing any of them? Do you frequently change jobs or career paths but are still not sure you are doing what you should be? Are you often referred to as ‘having you finger in many pies’ or have you been called a ‘Jack of all trades?’

Don’t stress – you’re not alone. I’m one of those people too, and the good news is that there is a name for us. We’re called ‘Multipotentialites.’

I came across this fantastic word while researching information for something else and as soon as I read the definition I knew that it described me with alarming accuracy.



According to Wikipedia, ‘multipotentiality is an educational and psychological term referring to a pattern found among intellectually gifted individuals. Multipotentialites generally have diverse interests across numerous domains and may be capable of success in many endeavours or professions. They are confronted with unique decisions as a result of these choices.’

So this means we are intelligent and multi-gifted – a label that I’m happy to wear. The down-side is that it can often cause us to be restless and transient. We are constantly moving from one interest to another, second-guessing ourselves and questioning whether we are making the right choices.



It’s mostly good though – we are clever, we love to learn and to explore, we absorb what we need to from a subject, task or project, and then move on. Some may see us as flighty, indecisive or directionless, but I prefer to see it as embracing a wide variety of experiences.

If you identify as a multipotentialite, embrace the title and enjoy the multitude of experiences you discover. Be proud of the fact that you are so multi-talented and ignore those who shake their heads each time you set out on a new pursuit.
