Time Is A Precious Resource

A day when I don’t have commitments feels like a gift. I love having a choice about how to spend my day. There are people who find it difficult to find things to do with their time but I am not one of them. Steve Jobs, co-founder, chairman and CEO of Apple Inc said,’ My favorite things in life don't cost any money. It's really clear that the most precious resource we all have is time.’ I agree with this sentiment.

Sometimes I enjoy spending time alone. On the spur of the moment I will decide to explore a different suburb or a park on my own. When I head off to somewhere new I take photos of mosaics, buildings, gardens and any interesting artwork on walls. I am always on the look out for anything a bit different or quirky. I like to try out cafes I have read reviews of or check out the resources of a public library. It is relaxing to sit at a park or reserve and observe nature.

Other times I like to stay home and spend time writing or reading. These pursuits are satisfying ways to use time. Likewise, time spent relaxing, looking at the garden and the birds pecking at seed is time well spent. Occasionally I relax with a DVD.

Some days I decide I want to do a task on my ‘Do Sometime’ list. I might get stuck into a de-cluttering task, rearrange a room or try a new recipe. It is satisfying to stand back to admire what one has achieved and cross something off the list.

Coffee at a cafe with a friend is a good way to spend time

As much as I enjoy my alone time, I also love being with family or friends. Sharing activities with family is very special. Doing something spontaneous can be lots of fun.

Sometimes I will text or phone a friend and suggest catching up that day and find they also have spare time. We might go to a movie or meet at a café for coffee. Barbara Bush (wife of George W Bush) expressed the value of time spent with those close to you. She said, ‘At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a friend, a child, or a parent.’

It is important to have a balance in life. I need some days when I have plans and a day now and then which is not planned out. It is good to spend some time relaxing and some time working towards goals. Likewise, one needs some time alone and some time in the company of others. While some people need a considerable amount of time alone, others crave company on a more regular basis.
