The Happiness Project Part 5 Physical Surroundings
A clutter free and inspiring space in the home
The physical surroundings in your home and in your work space do play a fundamental role in your happiness. A clean home is a happy home - no doubt you've heard that phrase before. It is fascinating to discover how small, simple improvements can make a profound difference to your happiness. We're now into part five of this 12-part Self Avenue Happiness Project series. Each area of your happiness leads onto another. Your physical surroundings can and do dictate your attitude. The previous articles in this series:

Your space definitely influences your mood and your outlook on a daily basis, not to mention your productivity. Not achieving tasks (even the simple ones) on your to do list drains your energy. A clean, inspiring space is everything.
I've just cleaned out my entire house recently. Even for a relatively clean two-bedroom house, this still took a whole day, however, the efforts were worth it. One of our writers has written an article on this recently. Please click

Some questions to ask yourself about your physical surroundings, and what inspiration can you gain to change it:
How does the space make you feel?
Is your space organised and clean?
Is there sufficient light? Is the light natural or artificial?
Does the space reflect your personal style?
Does this space inspire you to work?
Once you've done the above, ask yourself the following:
What things within your physical environment drain your energy?
I found that I lack natural light, and thereby the simple solution is to raise my blinds when working. This has begun to make a profound difference to my productivity, and then to my happiness.
What can you do to change this?
Simple solutions such as putting a bamboo plant on your desk, and burning a few candles also makes a difference.
While on this,
write down what else is cluttering your lifestyle. Your lifestyle and your physical surroundings go hand in hand. What I've come up with:
More exercise - join a gym.
Eat less junk food.
Sort out my skin - get a skin consultation.
Spend less time in front of the computer.
Ask yourself
"what I am going to do daily/weekly/monthly to create positive surroundings in enhancing my happiness?"
Some top tips to change your physical surroundings. They are small, yet these tasks are achievable piece by piece, room by room:
De-clutter a kitchen drawer.
Frame an inspiring quote.
Buy fresh flowers for the home weekly.
Light a candle.
Set up files for important documents.
Create a vision board.
Clean out your wardrobe/handbag/wallet.
Give away old clothes.
Start/grow a herb/vegetable garden.
Have a great week, and part six of the Self Avenue Happiness Project will be with you soon.
