Sounds That Lift My Spirits

Our senses make us more aware of the world around us, sometimes warning us of danger. They can also help us relax or lift our spirits. Although there are sounds I find annoying there are many which I enjoy.

Music
As I write this I am listening to music from YouTube. I can hear a violin and a guitar. A man is singing a ballad I haven't heard before and I am enjoying it. I often listen to music when writing, usually instrumental because lyrics tend to distract me. Hmmm, I may swap to something without words when this track ends.

The music itself can uplift my spirits or it may be the lyrics, if there are any. No one sort of music appeals to everyone, our tastes are varied. The type of music I feel like listening to is not always the same, but there is some that never appeals to me.

Recent studies suggest that much of a person's taste in music is influenced by the culture they were brought up in.

Personality also plays a part in a person's choice of music. As a generalisation, extroverts often like music featuring a heavy bass and pop music. Introverts are quite likely to go for rock or heavy metal. Even though the stereo type of a heavy metal fan is someone aggressive, studies suggest they are often gentle, creative and have a tendency to low self esteem.

Bird song
Many bird species have a delightful call. I love the sound of kookaburras, magpies, doves, canaries and owls. Although it is rather harsh I also like the sound of a crow. Sometimes I hear an uplifting bird call but don't now what type of bird is responsible for it because the bird is well hidden in the foliage of a tree.

Wind in the trees
I particularly like the sound of the wind blowing through sheoaks. It relaxes me and also reminds me of my childhood. We had a couple of sheoaks near our house.

Happy laughter
There are different sorts of laughter and if it is laughter at the expense of someone rather than happy laughter it doesn't lift my spirits. If I hear children laughing at a shared joke or a comedy it makes me happy. Sharing a joke with a friend produces a happy laugh that brings a positive feeling.

Voices of friends
Hearing a friend's voice brightens my day. I find it interesting how many slight variations there are to the human voice. I can usually pick who is talking by their voice even if I haven't seen the person.

Waves at the beach
Listening to the sound of waves at the beach makes me feel relaxed and at peace. Many other people also enjoy this and it is possible to buy CDs featuring this sound. It is a form of 'white noise' and a recording can help block out noise and distractions in an office or other busy environment.

Wind Chimes
Many wind chimes produce a sound which I found delightful. It is no surprise to me that some cultures believe wind chimes attract good luck.

The world is full of sound, some of it pleasant and some grating or even frightening. I block out some sounds and seek out other types, those that lift my spirits.
