Skill and Talent Are Different

Skill and talent are different in my opinion. While you can gain knowledge and develop a skill with or without interest; talent is something you possess - something that you are born with. With talent you will have interest and zeal. And when you exhibit it, it is one of the many ways you feel peace.

Skill is something that will eventually put you on top of the learning curve with practice. With dedication and sincerity, you can master any art and attain skills to take you places. But talent (on the other hand) is something you are blessed with - a given already in stock in your personal pantry. You just have to realise it, pick it, and use it the right way. But the catch with talent it is...unless you believe in it and see it within you, it's just going to rust inside you.

With skills you need to constantly upgrade to stay ahead of the competition. And similarly with talent, you need constant encouragement. Whether you source it from outside or within you , it acts as a fuel to help you to keep on going. And there is that dull moment that every individual faces where talents are not respected or encouraged, and you soon lose the belief in you; of which can easily put you in the avenue of skepticism and self doubt.

For instance, if you knew someone who would sing terribly, I mean so terribly that you would want them to stop singing even before they start. We all have crossed paths with such people. Now these people might be good at something else, but singing isn't their cup of tea. No matter how much skills related training you give them, it isn't going to help. But having said that, it doesn't mean they aren't good at anything. Like someone said they are probably "a fish trying to climb a tree." Put them in an ocean, and they are unstoppable.

Doing something you are good at will make you feel confident, and take you where you want to go. Instead people try avenues which aren't taking them anywhere, and then get into the cycle of self doubt, low self confidence and low self esteem leading to other bigger problems.

While skill can be attained, talent is already there in full stock waiting to be used. Unfortunately, you cannot spot talent when you stand in front of the mirror. Start exploring, and you would be surprised to see all the good things that are hidden inside of you.

Encourage your child to explore his/her talent, and the skills can be attained anytime.
