It Is Important To Delete

It Is Important To Delete

Life is full of decisions of what to save and what to get rid of (delete). When I declutter I keep some things and part with others. Which activities do I continue doing and which do I decide are no longer important? I make decisions about deleting when I clean out my inbox or the memo function on my mobile. Even in regard to thoughts I keep some and 'delete' others. Sometimes thoughts don’t want to be deleted and they fight back pretty hard!

I was recently deleting items from the memo function on my mobile phone when it occurred to me how important it is to delete. I use memo to record random bits of information, observations, lists and the start of articles. If I don't delete items I have dealt with, I end up with so much stuff I can't find what I am looking for.

Deleting makes space for new memos. Some decluttering experts say getting rid of redundant items from a home makes room for new and better opportunities to come into your life.

Some people are most comfortable living a minimalist life and others like the feeling of more items around them. It just feels 'cosier' to them. It's a matter of personal taste.

I have found my attitude has changed over time . I now prefer to have fewer things around me but I still love some decorative items. The difference is that I really see them now because they aren't lost in a jungle of bric-a-brac.

Now and then I enjoy bringing something new into my home. If that thing ceases to be important after a time, I set it free.

Activities that were once important to me have ceased to be. That is part of growing and changing. I can't be involved in everything which means decisions need to be made so I don’t get overwhelmed.

It’s hard sometimes. I loved doing pottery and the idea of doing it again has plenty of appeal. But then there would be less time for writing and there are so many things I want to write about.

I would like to learn to do mosaics. But again, there would be less time for writing. And if I really got into it as a hobby I would be saving every chipped piece of crockery. People would give me their broken china and when I was in an op shop I would be tempted to buy pieces that could be useful.

No, not going down the mosaic path. (Which is a bit of a joke as I have walked down paths created from mosaics.)

Some thoughts should be deleted. If I start catastrophising I need to hit 'delete'. Sometimes I need to work out a solution to the matter and other times I simply need to stop worrying about it. I need to delete thoughts which make a catastrophe out of something which isn’t that bad.

I have found it is easier to know what to part with or delete when I focus on what is important to me right now in my life.
