In Deep Contemplation
There's something about this contemplative pose that makes me feel comfortable. I even found myself instinctively sitting in this pose as I began to think about this article. It's a pose that comes easily to me. Perhaps that's because I like to think. To take time to contemplate. To wonder. To hope.
Sometimes it can seem like this deep contemplation, deep thinking and wondering is too much. That line between when it's helpful and when it becomes over thinking, and worse, turns into worry, is a very thin line. It's very easy to cross and before you know it you're on a journey that can lead to nothing more than sheer anxiety.
In defence of contemplation though, it certainly has its merits. It stops us rushing into things. It keeps us focused and ensures that we are looking at options and consequences. It can help to keep us calm and centred. It can help us focus on our inner voice, reach our true values, our soul if you like. It means we enter conversations with a considered approach. We can be ready to hear others if we have our own well thought our ideas - if we also have an attitude that others' thoughts are equally valid as ours that is.
Having said that, sometimes it might be helpful to let go of our tendency to contemplate. Just make a spur of the moment decision. Not allow ourselves to over-think. It can help us to trust our intuition sometimes to just go with the initial thoughts that come to mind. To resist the temptation to weigh up all options. Even allow ourselves to be influenced by or take the lead of others.
Perhaps the real trick is to decide when deep contemplation is useful - when it helps us and when it is necessary. Then to recognise the times when it's best to just go with the first thing that comes to mind. To feel free and not burden ourselves with too many thoughts and options.
