Being a swimming teacher as well as a writer, it gets extremely heated when certain irresponsible parents decide to dispose their kids into the holiday program to get a day off for themselves.
I've had little kids freezing in the water with their top lip turning blue and their arms crossed over to keep the warmth circling through their body. I see the kids shivering and their teeth chattering against each other. Sometimes I've had the poor things tell me they're sick or they want to stay home. I've asked, "Who made you come if you're unwell?" The kids tend to blame their parents being forceful.
I think it's pathetic behaviour from parents, children need to be nurtured from all ages and know their parents aren't going to send them off to a holiday program rather than care for them.
It's one thing to send your kid off to these programs because nobody is home to take care of them, which is understandable. But to doing it in the sense of laziness, that's what being a parent is all about.
Parents are meant to take care of their children and put them before themselves. People who choose to do the opposite, they clearly have no idea what they've signed up for if they think parenting is all fun and games.
Kids need to be reassured that their parents want them around and since children are fragile, any sign of rejection kids will close up and hide their emotions from their parents. Lazy parents, pull up your socks. Stop acting like a child and start being the parent.
