Like many people, I never particularly enjoyed exercise that much. Sure, I enjoyed the post-exercise endorphins. However, the exercise itself was, well, a bit of a chore.
I feel compelled to share with readers an exercise that has well, absolutely everything. At the moment it is free. In the upcoming times unless the Brisbane City Council can find more advocates of this wonderful exercise, funding may well be cut off. Their email is BL-CL-ActiveandHealthy@brisbane.qld.gov.au
The first time I attended Zumba I knew it was for me.
I really don’t know where to begin. Firstly, it is incredibly, totally, completely fun from beginning to end. It involves every part of the body. There is hip-shaking, leg-kicking, bum-wriggling, shoulder-turning and vocal exercise too – yes – lots of “woo-hoos” are mandatory and add to the enjoyment.
All the time there is music that changes so there is a little bit of Latino, like salsa, a little bit of African, music from all over the world. And you get to slow down to the wonderful tones of Patrick’s Swayze.
The exercise changes from hard aerobic, to gentler aerobic, to very gentle movements, so you never have moments where you can’t catch your breath. And it is important to add to this that you are totally encouraged to go at your own place.
People like myself are sometimes a bit concerned they may 'not keep up with the steps' - this is totally normal. It did not stop me having fun the first time, even though I didn't know. However, the steps are not that hard, and each time you go it will get easier
The most awesome part is probably our instructor, Melinda Carroll, who oozes enthusiasm and smiles which are incredibly contagious. She is warm and very welcoming, as are all the other ladies that attend. There are Zumba classes all over Brisbane – the ones I attend are at Kalinga Park, near Toombul train station and Hercules Park near Hamilton. For your nearest classes please see brisbane.qld.gov.au
In case there are no more free classes (we are told one more week) by all means still check out the council website under Activities.
I am addicted, unabashedly. I have never felt so good during and after an exercise class. I feel great for the rest of the day. Ten dollars is worth that!
