How can one rekindle the inner spirit and feel inspired once more?
Albert Schweitzer, (European theologian, organist, philosopher and missionary in Africa) said, ‘In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.’
I am fortunate to have people in my life who give me a boost and help recharge my batteries. There have been times when I have felt I am running on empty and have contacted a positive friend. I have felt so much better after spending time having some uplifting conversation. A laugh helps too.
Sometimes a chance encounter with someone will inspire us. Yesterday I caught a tram. It was fairly crowded so I ended up sitting with a group of three women who were in Adelaide from interstate. One of them commented on the book I was reading as she had read another book by the same author. We got into conversation about books, weekends away and the things to see and do in Adelaide. I wasn’t depressed but had I been, I am sure the time spent with these cheerful women would have boosted my spirits. It was a lovely event in an already nice day.
Reading something positive helps ‘rekindle the inner spirit’. A well written novel can transport you to a different world. A self help book or article may provide you with helpful strategies. The library is a treasure trove of reading matter. There is plenty of suitable material on the internet which can be accessed quickly.
A change of scene can rekindle the inner spirit. This may be a day out or a few days away. Often it is better to plan regular days out (or even a couple of hours break) rather than save it all up for a big holiday once every year or two. I find meeting a friend at different locations for a coffee and chat on a regular basis does a lot to keep me feeling recharged.
Spending time in a natural setting rekindles the inner spirit. Time at the beach, a park or a walk along a leafy street makes one feel better. It also helps
maintain a good energy level.
There are a variety of ways to ‘rekindle the inner spirit’ and different ways work better for different people. It is also important to look after your physical and emotional wellbeing to keep that inner fire alight.
