I let one of the dogs (Nena) outside, into the back yard, this morning. While we were outside, I spent my time watching the birds around the place. Here is a list and talk about the birds I saw or heard when I was outside (for only ten minutes).
The first bird was a male Murray Magpie. This bird strolled around the yard, while the dog wandered around and did what she’d gone outside for. This wouldn’t have been that peaceful if I’d let out any of the other dogs. Nena is an elderly schnauzer, and isn’t into chasing creatures. All of our other dogs are pharaoh hounds and are obsessed with chasing creatures. The bird wouldn’t have stayed around at all, if the hounds were out there.

The next birds I saw were Sparrows. Sparrows are our most numerous visitors, and I saw at least ten of them when I was outside, possibly more – apart from gender differences, they all look the same to me! Next bird I saw was a Swallow, circling around and then dipping into our swimming pool. While I was outside I saw at least six different Swallows. I always see both Sparrows and Swallows when I go out to the back yard during the day.
They are the only birds I saw while I was outside this time. Often I will see at least a couple of Starlings, there are a lot of Starlings around the place. It’s not unusual for me to both see and hear Willie Wagtails, too. I love these cheeky little birds, with their jaunty tail-wagging ways! The other black and white bird, the Australian Magpie is a regular visitor at times as well, but not this time.
There were several types of birds that were around the place that I didn’t see, but heard instead. These are Chickens from behind our place – they’re my neighbours’ chooks, and obviously there was some egg laying or other exciting things happening, because they were quite rowdy for a few minutes. Just before Nena and I went back inside, some lorikeets whizzed past. I only caught a brief glance at them, but they have a distinctive call that I recognised.
So this is the story of my bird watching fun. Being with Nena rather than the other three dogs makes it much more peaceful for all. I love connecting with Nature in this way, seeing the birds, hearing their voices. It is a serene and enjoyable way to spend some time, away from the stresses and demands of household life …
I also find watching the birds that visit my yard relaxing. I have set up a bird bath and an off-the-ground bird feeding tray outside the window of the room where I have my computer. I love looking out the window to see crested pigeons, sparrows and spotted doves. Swallows have a nest under the car port and they sometimes sit on the shed roof. Murray magpies and noisy miners visit my front yard. Musk lorikeets and rosellas fly past the front of my house. I hope they will sit in the small flowering gum next to the footpath once it grows bigger.
