A way to make money one often reads about is to hold a garage sale. The amount of work to set up such a sale and the amount of satisfaction and money you will get out of it can vary a great deal. Sometimes it is easy to work out why a garage sale wasn't successful, but other times it isn't.

Over the years I have held several garage sales. I have also helped friends hold one. Some have been successful in my terms, but to be honest, I have never made a lot of money from one. One reason is probably that I have never had items of great value to sell.

However, I have had fun holding garage sales. I have talked to interesting people and had a few laughs. At the end of most I have been pleased at the number of items that have been purchased. Sometimes I have given items away and been just as pleased that not only have they gone to good homes but I don't have to find somewhere to store them and I don't have to handle the guilt of dumping them.

So, what are the pros and cons of holding a garage sale?

Pros of a garage sale
It's a good way to decrease the amount of 'stuff' around the house after a serious bout of decluttering.
You have less things to pack if you are moving house.
Someone else takes away items you no longer need or want. Some of these may be heavy or bulky.
You will end up with more money than you had at the start of the day.
You will meet people. It can be a good way to meet some of your neighbours.
It can be a fun day especially if you have a good friend or two to help out and keep you company
It can be interesting to see what people buy. They may ask if you have other items and you may make unexpected sales. At one garage sale a woman asked if I had any dice for sale as she collected them.
It can be a good time to give away things you don't feel you can ask people to pay for. Before moving house items I gave away included odds and ends of paint, a broken sewing machine, a damaged desk and an old computer chair. I know there was more but I can't remember the particulars. I do remember the feeling of relief to see people walking out the gate with free stuff.

Cons of a garage sale
The weather can be against you. People are less inclined to go to garage sales when the weather is very hot, very cold or wet. If you don't have shelter some of your stock may be damaged and you could end up wet or sunburnt.
It's a lot of work to sort out items to sell, price and display them.
You may have trouble getting heavy items out of the shed and back in again if things don't sell.
You need a helper and what are you going to do if that person drops out at the last minute?
A customer may need help to load a heavy or large item into a trailer or ute. If you end up helping you may strain yourself.
If you don't have enough change you may have to drop the price on an item in order to make a sale.
You need to be security conscious so no one steals items from your garage sale, garden or house.
Occasionally potential customers get into an argument. One time I thought two men at one of our garage sales were going to have a punch up as they started to argue over an item they both wanted.
It can be a long day if you decide to open early and stay open late into the afternoon.
You have to pack up the items that do not sell and decide what to do with them.

A few weeks ago I helped a friend with her garage sale. The weather was perfect and my friend's house is on a street where there is usually a steady stream of traffic. The event was advertised and we had a sign directing people to the house. We were surprised and disappointed that there were few customers for the first couple of hours. Fortunately things picked up somewhat later in the morning but overall there were fewer people than we anticipated. Garage sales are unpredictable.

Instead of taking to price every article you want to sell Try putting all smaller articles in a box Colour code boxes on the front So green dotted articles can sell for $5 Or what colour you like .Seperate boxes or on tables Place a colour code chart with the price you decide on . Stick your chart on a wall or one on a tree outside your street with Your garage Sale sign Have all this preparation prior starting your Sale and customers have at least a starting point Don't over price Be prepared to negotiate if need be .Have fun 😉 Lee

What fantastic advice. I also think it's important to have fun and it can be a social activity as well as a way to make some money. Thanks for your suggestions.
