Being a leader is a great opportunity that many people admire and wish they could get a chance to. Since not everyone can become a leader, the chosen few should portray exemplary qualities beyond just being honest, confident, self-driven, and having perseverance. There are so many ways to improve leadership skills, but the only way that works a great deal to make you a great leader is self-awareness. The willingness of a leader to understand themselves and other people is what entails self-awareness and leadership.

In fact, it has been shown that leaders with high self-awareness fully comprehend their purpose and they have a good response to any situation they may find themselves in the leadership position. Every leader desires to experience self-fulfilment, greater productivity, and the best leadership skills through self-awareness. Here is a guide on how to improve your leadership skills through self-awareness.

Pay Attention to Your Feelings

Whatever feeling you are experiencing matters to your leadership skills, so pay attention to them. There is a reason why you are feeling that way. Paying attention means being specific about your feelings and not just being too general to label them as good or bad feelings. Sadness, excitement, happiness or guilt is a better way of describing your feelings as a leader. Take the short scarf self-assessment to assist you to comprehend what drives your social behaviour. Then take some time with your feeling and you will gain insight into what exactly is making you have that particular feeling. This is called self-leadership and it helps you to release all your feelings and learn from them.

Seek Feedback

You may think you know yourself more than any other person on earth, but this is not always true. Self-awareness is not just about you alone assessing yourself. Even though it may be weird to inquire from someone you trust and knows you better how you present in certain situations, it is the best way of getting to know yourself deeper. Ask your employee what they think or perceive you and your leadership skills. If they are honest enough, they may reveal to you some negative behaviour patterns that you never knew existed in you. Seeking feedback enables you to see yourself through other people’s eyes, giving you the advantage of discovering how your mannerisms, emotions and communication style affect other people, thus you can refine how you act to accommodate everyone and in so doing, you have improved your leadership skills.

Know Your Strengths and Weakness

Upon obtaining feedback, it will only make sense to act on the information collected. Nobody is a perfect leader. One most important way to improve your skills is to identify areas that you do the right thing perfectly as well as the areas you are poor at. You can then concentrate more of your energy and time to improve on the weak areas. Do you criticize your employee more than you offer them praise? Does your aggressiveness motivate them or you make them agitated and nervous? Knowing what makes you look bad is a great step in improving your leadership skills since you will give more effort to improve the poorly performed aspects of your leadership.

Practice Mindfulness

A leader is someone with skills that everyone would like to emulate. You should be knowing that as a leader, you don’t necessarily have to talk in order to pass a message. A lot can be learned just from your demeanour, your tone and the choice of words you use. To improve your leadership skill, you need to be very mindful of what you do, how you do it and why you do it. Whatever hectic day, you had, learn to bury your moods and remain composed.

Self-awareness is a very important trait of a great leader. It is this trait that you understand your personality, habits, emotions as well as values. Knowing these enables you to know how they affect your own actions and those of other and you will be able to deal with your own stress, make proper decisions and improve your self-awareness and leadership.
