Statistics have shown that people are more afraid of public speaking compared to death. Unfortunately, many of us have to over come this fear as public speaking is used in our every day lives including school and work environments.
There are certain reasons why people are afraid of public speaking:
- Afraid that we do not make sense
- Afraid that we are not entertaining
- Afraid people are not listening
- Afraid of being judged
- Suffer from anxiety
- Simply a shy person and do not like to speak in front of huge crowds
Any fear can be over come, especially your fear of public speaking. As it is such a vital ability to have, below are a few tips to help you be a pro public speaker.
Know Your Stuff and Be Prepared
Research your topic. Know your stuff and be prepared what you are going to say. One reason why we fear public speaking is because we do not have enough content or do not know the topic very well.
Always Have Keynotes
It is very difficult to remember certain information, especially when you are nervous. Having notes on cue cards can you make you more confident and will ensure you do not lose the train of thought.
Practice
Practice, practice and practice. If you know your stuff inside out, you will be calmer and the nerves will disappear. You will find it much easier to present your information.
Engage the Audience
If you are worried that you will not have your audience’s full attention, get them involved. The best way to do this is to ask them a question. They do not have to answer it, but make them think about it. This will keep their minds active and attentive. If you are able to use images throughout your presentation, this is also a good way to keep everyone entertained. People love visuals.
Before you speak in front of your audience, take a few deep breathes to help settle your nerves. Having butterflies before speaking is normal, so use it to your advantage. Good luck and be confident!
