Has a stranger ever helped you out or performed an act of kindness that you have never forgotten? Do you ever wonder about that person? Perhaps you have helped someone you didn't know and then gone on your way. You may even have forgotten the event but perhaps the person you helped still thinks about it from time to time.
This morning I was waiting for the pedestrian lights to change so I could cross the main street safely. It was so busy with lots of people doing Christmas shopping and children on school holidays. I remembered a particular time when I was trying to cross this street over forty years ago when there were no traffic lights anywhere in the town.
It was very busy, I think it was just before Christmas, as it is now. It was late night shopping and much busier than normal. I didn't know how I was going to get across the street and my situation was more difficult because I was pushing a wheelchair. I was aware I was responsible not only for my own safety, but for that of another person.
A man, someone I didn't know, stepped onto the road and held up his hand to stop the traffic for us. Once the traffic had stopped, he bowed and indicated we should cross the street. Thanks to the actions of this stranger we got across the street safely.
I don't remember what he looked like or how old he was. However, I have never forgotten how he took it upon himself to help us. He may have forgotten the incident soon after but it is one of those events that has stuck in my mind.
When I am in a difficult situation and don't know how I will cope I remember events like this one. The memories make me aware there are people in the world who will go out of their way to help out. I am not alone and in spite of all the bad things that happen, there are people willing to provide support.
