I love to get creative in the kitchen. I let my taste buds do the talking so to speak. I have never actually followed a recipe.
Recently I felt as though I needed something refreshing, a salad. So, I potted around the kitchen finding bits and pieces here and there. I thought rocket was the way to go, so I found some in the fridge along with lemon & pepper salmon, avocado and cucumber. Then my taste buds cried 'strawberries!' Strawberries? With salmon? I trust my taste buds, so I went along with it, and I'm so happy that I did!
This little salad mix immediately prepped me up and made me feel clean inside. It also did something else. The combination of the sweet fruit and other savory ingredients created a party in my mouth! It tantalized my taste buds and made me feel happy. I wondered why I had never thought of this before?
Since then I have also created a fish dish - fish simmered in coconut cream and freshly squeezed orange juice served with a Morrocan couscous, pomegranate seeds, spinach fresh from the garden and cooked green apple slices. Delicious! And once again, it's like a party in the mouth, making your taste buds come alive.
One morning I also cooked up a big breakfast of bacon, scrambled eggs, pancakes with maple syrup, blueberries, strawberries and a salad of rocket, sliced apple and balsamic vinegar. It's just a playground on the table, and a great way to start the day. I'm telling you. Especially on a Sunday morning.
I know I'm not the first to create a sweet and savory meal, but it really got me to thinking. Why do we categorise things? It's like the norm to have a dinner of meat, pasta and vegetables, then go on to desert. Why not mix it up? And this can be applied to anything. We really to need to step out of our comfort zones or routines every once in a while, because we can become so stuck in a rut and forget what it's like to feel, taste or do things for the first time. And how exciting are firsts for anything? They get the blood pumping and the skin tingling!
