What does ‘individuality’ mean? My old Heinemann Australian Dictionary says, ‘The particular characteristics which distinguish a person from others and mark him out as an individual.’
Some people feel more comfortable blending in with the crowd. They don’t want to display characteristics which distinguish them from others and they certainly don’t want to stand out. There are others who love to be noticed and don’t want to be part of the crowd.
When you sit down and talk to someone you will note characteristics commonly seen in others and ones which are different. You may be thinking how similar the two of you are and then they say or do something which shows they are definitely different from you.
One day I was talking to someone and thinking how similar we were. Then she started talking about driving in San Francisco when she was holidaying there. We weren’t so similar after all. Driving makes me nervous and there is no way I would drive in a large city.
Whether we like it or not, we are all individuals. Be proud of who you are and the fact no one else is just like you. There is no need to do something spectacular to prove you are an individual, just be yourself.
Here are a few suggestions for embracing your individuality-

• Stand up for your beliefs
• Be happy being yourself. Oscar Wilde said, ‘Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.’
• Acknowledge your flaws but don’t stress about them. Sometimes, what you believe to be a personal weakness can be seen as a strength if viewed from a different perspective. click to read more
It is great that we are all individuals. The world would be a boring place if we were all the same.
