Do Things Differently For A Day

Are you stuck in the rut of routine? Day in and day out everything seems to remain the same. It was Albert Einstein who once said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Well, we can't change everything that we do daily. Some things are necessary, but we can change what we can change.

Waking Up

Change your alarm tone to a different sound. Do stretches or take in deep breaths as soon as you are up. Jump in the shower straight away instead of just splashing your face. Drink tea instead of coffee. Eat dinner for breakfast, and change the channel from your favourite morning show.


If you catch the train to work or school; take a different route to the station. Walk if you drive. Run if you walk, and if you catch the lift take the stairs, and stand on a different part of the platform as you wait for the train. If you sit upstairs in the carriage, go down.

If you drive to work; go a different way. Change your radio station or music that you play. Find parking somewhere else.


Buy your lunch if you normally pack it, and vice versa. Sit in a different spot. Spend it with someone different, or if you are normally in a group go to lunch alone. Read if you usually talk. Walk if you normally sit. And if you can, have lunch at home.


Change the way in which you speak or what you would normally say. Instead of sorry say thank you. Be honest and up front if you are usually far from being blunt. Share your ideas and thoughts if you would keep them to yourself any other day. Have your say. Tell a joke and try to get a laugh, or if you talk a lot perhaps try cutting your words in half.


Mix up your routine. If you go to the gym, try that difficult machine. Walk backwards instead of forwards; there is less strain on your knees and you will work different muscles in your legs. Or if you normally exercise like crazy, perhaps take a rest and settle in with a good book in bed.

Just think of all the things you could do differently, and try it out for a day. See how you feel. There is no rule that states you can't do this. Your freedom is real. We can get so stuck in our patterns and ways. Sometimes all we need to feel different is a slight change in our day.
