Life, Negative, Positive

I like to concentrate on the positive rather than the negative. Sure, I am aware there are many negative things happening in the world. We hear of wars and terrorist attacks. Domestic violence and other acts of cruelty are all too common. We see these things on television and the internet, perhaps in our own street or own experience. People often speak negatively of others and can be nasty in the way they speak to others. It would be quite easy to get caught up in all the negativity and give up, but what a waste of a life to do that.

Some days I find myself particularly aware of the negative. We hear about natural disasters and famine in the world. There are murders and heinous crime, some in our own town or city. In the newspaper we read of children who are neglected and abused. Drugs and alcohol may be involved, sometimes there are other issues. Some of the children who have suffered continue the cycle when they become adults. Others somehow rise above the negativity and horror of their early days and break the cycle.

However, dwelling on the negative doesn’t help those who are suffering. Thinking of all the negative in the world does not help us be better parents or better neighbours. It doesn’t help our own health and in fact will make us sick in time.

Sometimes there is something we can do to help those who are suffering. Perhaps we can donate to a charity or volunteer our time to help a good cause.

We can help make our little bit of the world a better place by small positive gestures. It may be as simple as smiling or saying ‘hello’ to someone as you pass them. Listening to someone who needs to offload their problems can make the world of difference to a person who is stressed.

Even if you are not rich you can share what you have with others. You could give a neighbour some cuttings from your plants or a bag of fruit from the tree in your backyard. Little positive actions can make more of a difference than you realise. They can have a ripple effect as others follow your positive example.

Whilst there is much pain and suffering in the world, there are also positive events and people who are kind and loving. There is much beauty in the world in spite of the negative.
