A - Z of Self Care: Fun

It's something that we can forget to do when we become adults. There's something about being an adult that makes us get all serious, focused and may be just a little boring. We can forget to have fun. We can forget to look for things that are funny or to see the lighter side of life.

Fun can look like many different things. What one person thinks is fun might not be fun for another person. Fun might involve laughter or it might be just relaxing or doing something enjoyable. It might happen with others or by ourselves. If we wait for others to be around to have fun we might be missing out on opportunities of course.

In our day to day life we can find ways to have fun. We probably all know people who can do this. Being with them is always enjoyable.They can see the funny side of things. They don't complain or whinge about things. They value whatever it is they are doing and make the most of it. Perhaps others might even see us that way.

We might know people who still have a child-like way of seeing the world. Anticipating the excitement that comes with each new day. Looking for things that make life interesting. Going the extra mile. Not just doing what they have to do. Finding a way to make day to day chores fun and interesting. Children do this so well. If only we didn't lose that as we get older.

Sometimes doing something brand new can be fun. Or testing out our skills or competing against others. It can be doing the same thing over and over that we enjoy. It can be as simple as noticing things. Of observing the little things that are funny or special. Of noticing the ironies in life.This might take a bit of reframing at times but can be really helpful as a way of seeing things in a new light and finding the funny side.

Having fun is important to caring for ourselves because it can free our mind. It can lighten our load. It can help us cope better with stress and release those positive endorphins that help us feel so much better. Building in fun things to do can help us balance our life between tasks or chores that we have to do and fun things we choose to do. Even better, we can find fun in our everyday life.
